Wow, I can't believe a whole week has passed. I've been under the weather and exhausted and consequently too lazy to post. Sorry you've missed a whole week of work!
Scr - dictated writing over Into Thin Air. Vocab test tomorrow. 21st Century - Catch up day - interviews, personal statement, resumes. We also discussed letters of recommendation. Geo - Students gave their mini-country presentations. It's been really interesting to focus on some countries that I know absolutely nothing about, like Malaysia. Students also should be looking at a current event from this country. English 9 - Fish Bowl discussion on if schools should censor books. Great discussion groups and a FEW kids I really hope to coerce to join speech! English 11 - why author's change their grammar for the book. Breaking the rules! More reading The Road! It's been a gloriously rainy day! I love it so much.
SCR - Watched and learned more about Afghani Kite Fighting. Free reading. Tomorrow is vocab Test and Jamestowm. 21st Century - discussed what happens after submitting your resume and cover letter. Students are assigned to find 10 interview questions specific to a potential future career. Geo - Discussions of consequences of Political Instability. English 9 - Irony - contradiction between reality and appearances Verybal Irony - meaning 1 thing but saying another (like sarcasm) Situational Irony - sequence of events being different than what you would logically think was going to happen. Dramatic Irony - The reader knowing something that the characters do not. Can you think of an example from the Sphinx without a Secret or Lamb to the Slaughter? English 11 - Discuss " What does it mean to "carry the torch?" and Why do you think "the man" and "the boy" do not have names? Phew, when I saw the forecast for the day I was really worried. But it didn't get so bad at all. I guess it's because I have some pretty cool students. Ha.
SCR - We read a NYT article on Kite Runners and Kite Flying in Afghanistan. I think this is such an interesting sport. 21st - work on Resume/Personal Statement Geo - Read a short story called Tokyo and worked on picking on relevant details. English 9 - Discussed the characters in Sphinx without a secret. English 11 - Surprisingly enough the students demanded a reading day! It's great to see some of the kids get so involved. It was a dreary day in Oakland; although I was most excited for the weather the students were pretty muted.
SCR - Read The Kite Runner. 21st Century - Personal Statements and Resume Geo - Final Lit Circle English 9 - Group Annotations of The Sphinx without a secret. English 11 - I couldn't tell you why, but I was in a supreme mood today. It's finally our first full week since school started. SCR - We're going to be reading The Kite Runner. They got their vocabulary. 21st Century - I met with the students who had their personal statements done to review and look at. Scoped out Post Secret and discussed a student doing an art project. English 11 - Signed up for the junior college fair on Sept 24 in Atlantic! Man, if it was hard for me to focus after a full week of early outs, dress up days, pep rallies and games I can only imagine how the students are feeling.

These are due on Monday. Geo - Students had a literature circle. Tuesday will be their last meeting. English 9 - Students were given back their essays. We discussed the pros and cons of what I saw. Students as always are given the opportunity to redo their essays if they want. If they choose this, the new essay is due September 27. We also had a short lesson on characterization. English 11 - Students read from The Road and worked on their packets. Woo Tomorrow is homecoming. It has been hilarious to see so many of the kids dressed up for the spirit days. Rooting for a big bulldog win tomorrow! SCR - Reading, Vocabulary practice and Think pair share. What is the most exciting part of your book? 21st Century - turned in a draft of our resumes (more people need to turn this in). We also discussed writing personal statements. Students began drafting their personal statement - remembering to tailor it to any colleges/jobs/or careers they're interested in! Eng 9 - I had so much fun working with English 9 today. Students did an activity with their annotations from Lamb to the Slaughter. The key is that students should be checking out what others are commenting and learning how to make theirs better. We had a couple funny moments! The below picture is a blood smear from a squished ant. Which we promptly labeled as Mr. Maloney! Too funny. Geo - Students read their haiku's aloud to the class. Shout out to Gran, Adam and Ryan for mastering the element of cutting and to Allison for sharing her awesome poem about summer! Proud of you!
