Education and Experience
I graduated from a small Iowa high school just north of Des Moines and promptly attended Morningside College. I graduated from Morningside with a Bachelor of Arts in Secondary English Education, in 2009. At this time, I was awarded the Douglass E Wood Award for my potential to be an outstanding educator, but I was only 20!
So I decided to get out of Iowa and get some "real life" experience. After all, I was going to be the best teacher ever! And the more I knew and learned the better I could teach. I joined AmeriCorps National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC). NCCC is a ten month, team-based, residential community service program. It truly changed my life. In the two years after graduating college, and solely because of this program I....
* tutored outside of Sacramento, California
* mentored in Boys and Girls Club of SouthCentral Alaska in Anchorage
* ran a children's gardening program in Seattle, WA
* worked toward energy efficiency and rebuilt homes in New Orleans, LA
* saved the environment in Malibu and Catalina Island, California and North Bend, WA
I got way more life experience working with diverse students, volunteers, co-workers and adults than I could have ever learned in the classroom. I visited many states and saw some truly inspirational and amazing things. All so that I could come back to my home state, the great state, of Iowa and teach! I still service on the Americorps Alumni Leadership council and enjoy talking to students, parents and strangers on the street about my experience.

PS. AmeriCorps NCCC gives you a living stipend, an education award, they pay for food, housing and in-program transportation. Do it! Best choice ever! And I'm not the only one who thinks so! |

Riverside High School
I joined the Riverside High School staff in August of 2012. When I interviewed at the high school, I was extremely impressed by the nature of the staff and the students. Both were welcoming and seemed to have their priorities of student achievement and success right on target. I was extremely excited when I was offered the position.
I teach English 9, which I will admit I was nervous for at first, but my first year freshmen have been absolutely wonderful. Lots of good things to write home about. I also teach English 11, 21st century, Brit Lit, Second Chance Reading and two electives. Last year I taught Geo-cultural literature and memoirs, and this year I am teaching Creative Non-fiction and Semester of Serrvice! For a look at what is happening in the classroom check out Our Daily Life Blog, or the specific classroom websites. I also have been co-coaching speech with my counterpart, Mrs. Hardy, sponsor National Honor Society, participate on our MTSS or RTI committee, and pretty much help out wherever and whenever I'm needed!

I had an awesome summer! In June, I traveled to the Dominican Republic with several fellow AmeriCorps Alums and an awesome non-profit. While I was there We worked at rural medical clinics, a hop skip and a jump from the Haiti border, assessed children for malnutrition, built a tire playground for an upcoming kids camp, and built a screened in porch at the volunteer house. After getting back to the states, I had approximately one week to get washed and packed for 21 days on the road! We drove from Iowa to Maine, and all the way down to Key West before turning around and heading back. This trip finished off the continental US. I've officially been to every state except Hawaii! I also got to go to a Ray LaMontagne (my favourite) concert at Red Rock in Colorado, the zoo with my family and had my baby sisters come stay with me for a weekend. I could not have had a better summer!
